Remington 5-1/2 Primer Case: Frequently Asked Questions

How should I store small pistol primers at home?

Remington 5-1/2 Small Pistol Primers should be stored in their original packaging, away from heat, open flame, and static sources. Primers are sensitive to impact and friction, so keep them in a cool, dry cabinet out of reach of children. For detailed guidance on safe storage of primers and other reloading components, the NSSF safety resources page is a solid reference.

Which handgun cartridges use a small pistol primer?

Remington 5-1/2 Small Pistol Primers fit most standard-pressure small pistol cartridges, including 9mm Luger, .380 ACP, .38 Special, and .45 ACP. Always confirm your load data specifies a small pistol primer before loading, since some cartridges use large pistol primers instead.

How does this differ from a small pistol magnum primer?

Remington 5-1/2 Small Pistol Primers are a standard-pressure primer, not a magnum variant. Magnum primers use a hotter, longer-burning mix meant for slower powders or larger charges, while a standard primer like this one suits most everyday handgun loads.

What quantities are available for bulk reloading?

Remington 5-1/2 Small Pistol Primers are commonly sold in boxes of 100, with sleeves of 1,000 and cases of 5,000 available for high-volume reloaders. Buying in bulk typically lowers the per-primer cost for regular handloaders.

Can primers be stored long-term without losing reliability?

Remington 5-1/2 Small Pistol Primers can last for decades when kept dry, cool, and sealed in their factory packaging. Humidity is the biggest threat to long-term reliability, so avoid storing them in a damp garage or basement.
