Hornady Critical Defense Ammunition 44 Special 165 Grain FTX Polymer Tip Box of 20

The Hornady Critical Defense 44 Special 165gr FTX is a lightweight, purpose-built self-defense round. Above all, Hornady engineered this load specifically for short-barreled defensive revolvers. The FTX bullet’s polymer tip is designed to trigger reliable expansion even at reduced revolver velocities.

Why Choose Hornady Critical Defense

The FTX (Flex Tip eXpanding) bullet uses a soft polymer insert seated in the hollow point cavity. That tip drives the bullet open on impact instead of allowing the cavity to plug with clothing material. For reference, Hornady also loads this round with a low-flash powder ideal for low-light defense, per specs at saami.org. Meanwhile, Hornady backs this load with decades of defensive ammunition research.

About This Hornady Critical Defense 44 Special 165gr FTX Load

At 165 grains, this is one of the lightest, fastest defensive loads offered in this caliber. That speed helps deliver dependable expansion even from the short barrels common on carry revolvers. Indeed, it is a favorite among shooters who prioritize concealability alongside stopping power. Ultimately, it suits shooters who carry a compact or snub-nose 44 Special. It also stands out as one of the most trusted names in defensive ammunition.

It also produces noticeably less felt recoil than heavier options in this caliber. Many concealed carriers choose this load specifically for its balance of speed and reliability. Liberty Anno Supply carries this modern defensive load for concealed carry. Browse our full 44 Special ammo lineup for more defense options. Buying for practice and carry both?
